Driving shoes were made for, you guessed it, driving! Keep in mind that these can double simple casual shoes. The trick is to wear them right and make sure you take care of them.

How to Style Driving Moccasins

A driver is a loafer that has the rubber outsole wrapped up onto the heel and a typical loafer profile on the upper. If you get too bogged down in the driving aspect of the shoes then you lose some of the flavor of the shoes.

Imagine having a nice, smooth pair of drivers that you’re driving your ’63 Corvette with. You stop the ‘Vette and hop out…you still need shoes to wear. What else are you going to walk around in but the shoes you drove the car in?

Also, keep in mind that shoes bring with them a certain mystique that says, “that guy has a cool car otherwise he wouldn’t have those nice drivers on.” You might drive a Ford Pinto, but it’s nice to be noticed…even if you don’t have the fancy car.

How to Care for Driving Moccasins

If you do a ton of driving in your drivers you need to keep in mind that you will destroy the heel if you dig in. Don’t use the rubber on the heel as a stop-gap for common sense.

Drive like you normally would, but keep in mind that the rubber on the heel just makes it easier – especially if you’re driving a car with a manual transmission…it makes the move to the clutch smoother.

Care for them like you would any other shoe…brush out suedes, polish top calf leather, and treat oil-tanned leathers.

One point of contention with these shoes: they tend to have tan stitching which is always darker than the shoe itself. Please don’t polish the stitching…it takes a few extra minutes to be careful, but it looks much better this way.
