Leather Boot Care: A Simple Routine Without Overconditioning

Start with the leather type, not a shelf full of products. Smooth leather, waxed leather, suede and nubuck need different treatment. Check the maker’s instructions before applying anything; test products on a concealed area.

After ordinary wear

Remove loose dust with an appropriate brush. Let the boots air between wears, away from direct heat. Store them somewhere ventilated rather than putting damp boots into a closed cupboard. Inspect laces, stitching and soles while cleaning.

When boots get wet

Remove surface mud gently and allow the boots to dry naturally. Do not use a radiator, hair dryer or oven to speed things up. Remove insoles if the maker permits it. If using paper inside, replace it as it becomes damp.

Condition only when needed

Conditioner is for suitable leathers, not a treatment to apply automatically after every outing. Too much can change colour and feel. Use a small amount according to the product and maker’s directions, then allow time to assess the result. Suede and nubuck normally need their own tools and products.

Recognise a repair job

A separating sole, worn-through heel or broken stitching needs assessment by a repairer. Conditioner cannot repair structural damage. Photograph the boot and ask for a quote before wear reaches the upper or lining. A regular light clean and timely repairs are a more sensible routine than repeated heavy treatments.
